Business Leader Media announces the nomination of Algenon L. Cash for 2008 Movers and Shakers Award.
(Greensboro, NC) September 10, 2008 – With a last name like Cash, you might think he's all about the money. But Algenon Cash is all about the community, and the community has paid him back in kind, nominating him for Business Leader Media's 2008 Movers & Shakers award.
It would be easy to head into the door of Wharton Gladden & Co. every morning, where he serves as managing director and chairman of the operating committee, and just do his job, but that's not the way Cash functions. In fact, he feels so strongly about giving back to the community that all associates at the company are required to participate in civic effort outside of their jobs, through a program called Power of One. "I think businesses and corporations need to be about more than just making money," Cash says. "I think they need to be good corporate citizens for their community."
From a chance encounter with one of WQMG's personalities at an event where they both were speaking, Cash's moving and shaking now extends over the local airwaves, where he serves as a financial consultant to listeners. "Even if a listener isn't in my target demographic as a buyer of commercial real estate, it gives them a chance to learn about money management," he says. Outside of wealth management, Cash frequently speaks about success and leadership, believing that his upbringing in an urban Winston-Salem neighborhood calls him to share of his time and talents whenever possible.
Even at night, Cash's voice is heard. Instead of laid-back nights on the couch, Cash responds when called by Vigils for Healing, a group that rallies and prays at sites where a murder has taken place. His place on the board of directors for the organization keeps him involved even when he's not called upon to speak at those sobering, meditative events.
For the moment, though, one of his goals is achieved, despite all the places he still wishes to devote his energy. "I attended the first 'Movers & Shakers' event, and I can recall telling myself that one day I will be on that stage," Cash says. "I put action to those words, and it brings me joy to achieve my goal."
